Week 8, June 24

Barry scythed away for a couple of hours, mainly recutting the areas south of the bridge and along the trail that runs south of the ravine plus the triangle formed where the trails meet.

After Barry scythed

After break he worked in the sumac stand where the Bill Holland trail comes out at the parking lot. He noted that DSV regrows in four ways, either directly from the ground (it likes disturbed soil, so we probably liberated some dormant seeds) and in three different ways from cut plants: up from the crown; from the leaf nodes; and, if there are no leaf nodes, from the stem.

On Tuesday the group discussed the need to cut close to the ground after discovering the leaf node shoots, but today’s observations show that DSV will grow back no matter what. Perhaps the leaf nodes are simply the easiest place of the set of possibilities.
